Receiving visa at international border gates in Vietnam includes airports (Noi Bai International Airport, Tan Son Nhat International Airport, Da Nang International Airport), international road border gates (such as Huu Nghi Quan, Ha Khau, Moc Bai, Cau Treo, etc.) and sea ports.
In order for foreign nationals to enter Vietnam legally, they need a visa issued by the competent authority of Vietnam. Typically, foreigners will have to go to the competent authorities in Vietnam’s foreign missions to have their visa stamped, such as the embassy or representative office of Vietnam. However, the Immigration Department also allows some cases of foreign nationals to receive visa directly at international border gates.
1. Cases of foreign nationals granted Vietnamese visa On Arrival
Based on the regulations in Article 18 of the 2014 Immigration Law, foreign nationals granted visa at international border gates include the following cases:
Departing from a country without a competent authority to issue visa to Vietnam;
Passing through multiple countries before arriving in Vietnam;
Visiting Vietnam for tourism purposes under the program organized by an international travel company in Vietnam;
Foreign sailors who are on a ship anchored at a Vietnamese seaport and wish to exit through another border gate;
Entering Vietnam to attend the funeral of a relative or visit a seriously ill relative;
Entering Vietnam to participate in the handling of emergency incidents, search and rescue, natural disaster prevention and control, disease prevention and control, or for other special reasons at the request of a competent authority in Vietnam.
2. Vietnamese visa On Arrival application process at international border gates
Step 1: Apply for an entry letter from the Immigration Department
Before foreign nationals planning to enter Vietnam, the inviting organization, individual or guarantor must apply for an entry letter (invitation letter) at the Immigration Department – Ministry of Public Security. Only when the Immigration Department approves the application can foreign nationals receive visa at the international airport border gate. The Immigration Department will reply in writing whether or not to approve and send it to the individuals or organizations that need to guarantee the foreign national’s entry so that the foreign national can receive a visa at the international airport border gate.
Step 2: Receive visa at the international border gate
- Present the passport. Note that the passport must be valid for at least 6 months at the time of entry.
- Present the entry permit (can be a photocopy or printed from a computer).
Note: The inviting organization or individual should send a scanned copy of the entry permit to the foreigner so that they have time to print it before arriving at the airport.
- Fill out the Vietnam visa application form – Form NA1 – Vietnam visa application form.
- Prepare 2 photos with a size of 4×6 cm or 3×4 cm to be pasted onto the Vietnam visa application form.
- Pay the visa fee at the international airport border gate as prescribed (Payment can be made in Vietnamese Dong or USD).
